During the last post we touched on DNA, this time we would like to expand into epigentics. Scientists historically believed that our inherited genetic code dictated who we are. Much research has been undertaken to map human genetic material, this is called the genome. In 2003 researchers completed the genetic map but soon realised there were more questions than answers - such as why they couldn't tell if a person has blue or brown eyes simply by looking at their DNA.
In order to tackle this challenge, scientists have started tackling something above the human genome - this is called the epigenome.
All our cells contain the same DNA, how they are expressed is dependant on the Epigenome and determine is a cell becomes a skin cell, a liver cell or a brain cell. Think of your genetic makeup as a blueprint where your cells are the architects that read and implement certain parts of the blueprint based on what comes into contact with them. The blueprint, your DNA, remains the same, but based on certain factors such as nutrition you can change the way in which certain parts of your DNA blueprint are read and implemented - or not!
Today, research shows that environmental factors, including nutrition, good or bad, switches your genes on or off.
The days of genetic determinism are long gone, epigenetics provides a new model for understanding health. The nutritional therapist is central to this model and can provide a wealth of information in order to improve the health of their clients.
